Sophia Bush on Prop 8 Passage: “I’m Embarrassed”

Add Sophia Bush to the growing list of grousing stars upset over the passage of California’s gay-marriage-annihilating Prop 8.

“I’m really proud to be an American,” the One Tree Hill star said of the election of Barack Obama, “and I’m embarrassed to be a Californian right now.”

Speaking to E! News at Thursday’s DSquared2 party in the penthouse of Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont, Bush said she was psyched to see Obama win, especially since she campaigned for him. She also hopes to attend his Jan. 20 inauguration.

But her excitement was tempered by the narrow passage of Prop 8. “It’s just so sad that when we’ve been so progressive, we’ve also taken so many steps backward,” she said, choking up. “I’m disgusted.

“In a world that is so full of hatred and bigotry and war and famine? We’re criticizing two people for loving each other. I think that it’s devastating.”

‘One Tree Hill’ star Sophia Bush learned over 6 years

With the sixth — and possibly final — season of CW’s “One Tree Hill” and two new films out this year, actress Sophia Bush opens up to CosmoGirl! magazine about such key issues as:

Facing the end of the show: “The other day the entire cast started this group hug. We’ve been through so much together. But I’m also excited for what’s next.”

Avoiding the Hollywood reputation of being a party girl: “I like going somewhere my friends and I can laugh and catch up, rather than dance on tables and have nine cocktails.”

What she’s learned from fame: “When you’re young and new to this business, people want you to put everything out there. When ‘OTH’ started six years ago, we all thought it was normal to talk about everything, and I’d talk about my relationship (with Chad Michael Murray). But that was the first and last time I’ve ever discussed a relationship with the press.”

Sophia Bush Loves Her Healthy Curves

One Tree Hill star Sophia Bush is only 26, but for her, good health is a lifelong mission. “I’ve started to treat my health like a science project,” says Bush, who can rattle off lists of bone-density-building exercises and antioxidant-rich foods with aplomb. Bright and refreshingly levelheaded, the Pasadena, Calif., native is the only child of father Charles, a photographer, and mom Maureen, who runs a photo studio. And Bush has done her parents proud: You won’t find her spilling half-naked out of a limo. (In fact, the only time she made tabloid news was when she and her Hill co-star Chad Michael Murray divorced in 2005 after five months of marriage.)

Bush spends most of the year commuting from her Los Angeles home to the Wilmington, N.C., set of One Tree Hill, which has just started its sixth season. (She’s also in two upcoming films: The Narrows and Table For Three.) In her limited spare time, Bush is a passionate advocate for health-care reform, a role she took on after witnessing loved ones who have fallen ill. Here, she holds forth on that cause and much more.

How Sophia Bush Beats Stress

Q: How do you combat stress?
A: I’m definitely a person who gets stressed out, but we all have things that we learn over the years that beat it, whether it be calling my mom or my best friends to say hi, because hearing their voices make me feel better. Or go to the gym, take your dog for a walk, whatever. One thing I’ve learned is you can’t control a lot. Don’t stress out about it, be pro-active about it.

Q:You’re always jumping on and off planes from L.A. to Wilmington. How do you stay healthy with all of that traveling?
A: I should probably do more. I drink a lot of water, I try to do three liters a day, and I carry hand sanitizer in my bag and make sure I use it a couple of times a day when I’m flying. But you don’t want to be too germ-free, because then you don’t have any immunity to anything.
